Rapid Biphasic Pulsing

Over the coming weeks, we will spotlight common and not-so-common pulsing techniques used by the electrochemistry community. Applying voltage or current pulses across an electrochemical interface presents several challenges depending on the pulse characteristics and require a deeper understanding of how potentiostats operate.

This week, we highlight rapid biphasic pulsing that is used to stimulate tissue in neural stimulation devices. These two-phase pulses manage charge balancing in charge injection schemes where charge injection stimulates the tissue and the second pulse of opposite polarity ensure the net charge is zero. Learn more about biphasic pulsing using a Gamry potentiostat below. The Reference 620 potentiostat is the most suitable instrument for rapid biphasic pulsing because of its speed and sensitivity at the lowest current ranges.
