CPT110
Critical Pitting Temperature Software

The CPT110™ Critical Pitting Temperature Software runs an important pitting test available in no other commercial corrosion test system: Critical Pitting Temperature. Designed to control your Gamry Potentiostat, tests are run using our Microsoft® Windows™ based software. The results are analyzed using using the Gamry Echem Analyst augmented with our specialized menus. Nothing could be more powerful and more cost effective for diagnosing your pitting problems.

Applications for the CPT110 include materials selection in the chemical process industry, alloy ranking, evaluating pitting inhibitors, etc. Anywhere you have a pitting problem, the CPT110 techniques, coupled with the cyclic polarization or critical pitting potential scans, will be useful.

The CPT110™ system, along with any Gamry Potentiostat, can be pre-configured as a turnkey solution, integrated into a lunchbox-type portable or desktop computer.

Standard Experiments
  • Critical Pitting Temperature - In the Critical Pitting Temperature technique, the temperature is increased in steps while monitoring the current at a fixed potential. The temperature is controlled by hardware within 1º C during the experiment. The resulting data is a series of current/time curves at different temperatures, allowing you to determine the critical pitting breakdown temperature of your system.

  • Cyclic Thermammetry - In a Cyclic Thermammetry test, the cell temperature is slowly ramped up while cell current is measured. A constant anodic potential is applied. When either the temperature or current hit a predetermined limit the scan is reversed. The result is a curve very similar to a cyclic pitting scan, but with temperature as the independent variable.

  • CPT Testing of Stainless Steels (ASTM G150) - The ASTM G150 test provides a prediction of resistance to pitting propagation on stainless steels.  Similar to Cyclic Thermammetry described above, G150 ramps the temperature at 1° C/minute while applying a constant anodic potential.  Current is monitored during the temperature scan until a rapid increase is recorded.  The CPT point is defined at the time a rapid current increase occurs, or when current density exceeds 100 µA/cm2.

Supporting hardware to conduct Critical Pitting Temperature analysis and Cyclic Thermammetry is available. Gamry's TDC2 Temperature Controller can control heating and cooling circuits directly. Temperature limits, step sizes, delay periods, etc. are all under user control. The TDC2's two switchable outlets are under software control and can also be used for controlling pumps, stirrers, rotators, etc. For heating, we recommend the Flexcell Heating Mantle (Part No. 990-147,148).   The Flexcell Test Cell is designed to counteract crevice corrosion around the specimen seal, which commonly undermines the test results of other cells.

Gamry's Flexcell is designed to counteract a problem that plagues most other flat sample designs -- crevice corrosion around the specimen seal.  First popularized by Avesta Steel, the cell utilizes a flooded gasket seal design to inhibit crevice corrosion between the sample and its holder.  This simple yet elegant design results in an easy to use, reliable, crevice free system.
