Short
Courses Sponsored by Gamry
Gamry manufactures high-performance
electrochemical instrumentation to address literally every major
application in the electrochemical laboratory. We also provide free
technical support for our products. For a pure educational
experience, however, it's tough to beat an academic environment. A series
of formal classroom lectures and organized laboratory exercises in an
intensive one-week burst is very effective. For that reason, Gamry
supports two Short Courses in electrochemistry. You can find more
information below, or call Gamry for our comments on each Short Course.
Short Course on Electrochemical
Impedance Spectroscopy: Theory, Applications, and Laboratory Instruction
University of Texas Health Science Center (Houston, TX) with faculty from
UTHSC, Ohio
State, Teledyne Science and Imaging, and Battery Design Corp. Dr.
David Loveday from Gamry will also be attending to lend his able assistance.
Date: November 1-5, 2009.

Short
Course on Corrosion: Fundamentals and Experimental Methods
Pennsylvania State University with faculty from Penn State (Drs.
Barbara Shaw and Howard Pickering) and Ohio
State (Drs. Jerry Frankel and Rudy Buchheit). Drs. Pete Peterson and
Jacob Ketter from Gamry will also attend.
Date: June 6-11, 2010

Software Bug in
Corrosion Rate Calculation
There is an error in the Polarization Resistance experiment in the
Sequence Wizard in Version 5.50 of Gamry Software. The fix is easy
and we've notified our users who are affected, but if you downloaded
Version 5.50 and did not include an accurate email address, then we
couldn't notify YOU. If you
are using Polarization Resistance in the Sequence Wizard and need the fix,
contact us.

Genius Award to Dr.
Marc Edwards
Congratulations to Dr. Marc Edwards of the Dept. of Civil and
Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech for his fellowship award from the
MacArthur Foundation. Dr. Edwards was recognized for his research on
the corrosion and deterioration of municipal water distribution systems.

Dr. Jud Flato
We are sad to report the passing of Dr. Jud Flato on May
10, 2008. Jud played a major role in pushing electrochemistry into the
world of modern instrumentation in the late 60's and early 70's. For an
interesting view into this period, and into the mind of Jud (caution is
advised!), see J. Chem. Ed., 84, 656(2007). Jud also had some
influence on a couple of Gamrarians and we remember him...sometimes fondly, but
always with appreciation and a smile. |

Solartron
Criticizes Gamry's Technique for EIS
Solartron, the British manufacturer of Frequency Response Analyzers, has
criticized everybody who markets instrumentation for EIS that does not use
a Solartron FRA, including Gamry. Read

New
Techniques Added to Gamry Software
Version 5.21 of our software was introduced in February 2007. We
took this occasion to add three new pulse techniques (Repeating
Chronoamperometry, Repeating Chronopotentiometry, and Multiple Step
Potentiostatic) to our PHE200 Physical
Electrochemistry Software. These techniques are useful for
sensor development, pulse plating research, and other applications.
We also added the THE Repassivation Potential technique to our DC105
DC Corrosion Techniques Software. The THE technique is a new
approach to characterizing crevice corrosion and is currently undergoing a
round-robin in ASTM G01.

FC350
Fuel Cell Monitor Featured in a Recent Publication
A paper
employing the FC350 Fuel Cell Monitor to evaluate the
preparation technique of a membrane electrode assembly has been
published. Workers in Germany and Brazil evaluated assembly
techniques deliberately chosen for their simplicity to work toward a
low-cost device.

An
Excellent Review of Methods for Corrosion Rate Determination
Drs.
John Scully and Rob Kelly of the University of Virginia have published a
very complete review of the various methods, electrochemical and others,
for the determination of corrosion rate. Uniform corrosion, pitting,
electrochemical noise, galvanic corrosion, paints, and nonelectrochemical
methods are discussed. The review can be purchased from ASM
International. It can be found in the ASM Handbook as "Volume
13A -- Corrosion: Fundamentals, Testing, and Protection." The
ASM Handbook costs about $220 US, but you can order Volume 13A from the
ASM Library by calling (800) 336-5152 (US and Canada), Extension 5476 and
requesting that a copy of Volume 13A by mailed to you. The cost will
be about $30. Outside the US, contact ASM through their website at www.asminternational.org.

If
You Can't Identify Your Counter Electrode
Lead, You Need a Mouse Pad!
Does this sound familiar? You're about
to connect your Gamry Potentiostat to your cell and you forgot the color of the
counter electrode lead! If that's your problem, we've got the
solution. The Gamry Mouse Pad has a picture of a cell cable in living
color with each lead clearly identified. If
you'd like a free Mouse Pad, just drop us an e-mail or
give us a call and we'll ship it to you.
