Abstract

The present work concentrates on the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of hydroxyapatite, bioglass and iron oxide nanoparticles nanocomposite coating into chitosan matrix on AZ91 Mg alloy. The iron oxide nanoparticles formed by the co-precipitation method and varied at 1, 3 and 5 (wt %) concentration in the bioactive coatings. Scanning electron microscopy graphs exhibited that the nanocomposite coatings had a porous spherical structure. The hydroxyapatie-bioglass-1% iron oxide coating demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance among all the samples. The hemocompatibility tests indicated a hemolysis ratio < 5%, and no detrimental effects on the erythrocytes. The findings revealed that hydroxyapatite-bioglass- iron oxide-chitosan coating could be considered as potential candidate for degradable implant applications.
