VistaShield™ Faraday Cage

Gamry’s VistaShield Faraday Cage provides effective shielding from environmental electronic noise allowing for high quality electrochemical measurements particularly at very low currents. The VistaShield Stir-Purge allows for magnetic stirring and switching of gas flow for purging and blanketing a solution within the Faraday Cage.

Faraday Cage

The VistaShield Faraday Cage’s powder-coated 304 Stainless Steel construction is designed to stand up to a wide variety of laboratory environments.  The Faraday cage’s conductive glass window allows experimenters to visually observe the cell during an experiment without breaking the shielding.  It is available as a stand-alone unit or with a Stir-Purge.

Access is provided by two 2.5 cm (1 in.) side holes with swing covers and four 1.25 cm (0.5 in.) holes on the back.   Inside the VistaShield, a ring stand and anchor points on the back wall aid experimental setup and cell stability.  There's also a ground lug for a convenient connection to the ground lead of your potentiostat.

Typical setup would involve cell cable(s) from a potentiostat entering via one or both side holes.  Purge/blanket gas would be fed in through one or two back holes.  Feed/return lines for temperature controlled [water] would also go through the back holes.

There is a post inside the VistaShield Faraday Cage next to the ring stand bar for grounding the VistaShield to the potentiostat.  The potentiostat ground must be connected to the Faraday cage for proper shielding.  If the potentiostat is independently connected to an earth ground source, then this ground connection is sufficient to earth the Faraday cage.  If the VistaShield is connected to a source of earth ground independent the potentiostat it is highly recommended that the potentiostat NOT be connected to another earth source, but only the VistaShield.

Stir-Purge

The VistaShield Stir-Purge is available together with the Faraday cage or separately so that it can be added to a VistaShield Faraday Cage already in the lab.  It may also be used on its own for users who need the function.

It has the same stainless steel construction as the Faraday cage.  There are two functions of the device: magnetic stirring and gas purging/blanketing.  The stirrer speed and the gas flow rate are controlled by knobs on the front panel.  The stirrer switches between on, off and remote, while the gas flow switches between purge, blanket and remote.

The rear of the Stir-Purge has one gas line in and two gas lines out, a 15 pin D connector which is used with Gamry potentiostats’ Misc I/O for remote control, a USB for computer interfacing, and switched DC power in.
