Installing Eight Gamry Potentiostats in a MultEchem Electrochemistry System

Even though you understand that Gamry can build a research Potentiostat that is at least an order of magnitude smaller than any other on the market, you may wonder how eight of these instruments can be installed in one computer!  Inquiring minds want to know!

Each Gamry Series G Potentiostat needs two PCI slots: one slot for the Controller Board and one slot for the Potentiostat Board.  We use an industrial computer that has 20 PCI slots.  That may sound very unusual to you, but it's not -- industrial computers can be purchased with a wide variety of specifications.  The computer runs Windows XP or Vista and is operated exactly like your home or office computer that's running Windows XP or Vista.  In the photo above, we've removed the cover of the computer.  As you can see, the industrial computer is "deeper" than a home computer and all of the Potentiostats are installed in the rear portion.

Note: The dimensions of the industrial computer are 55 cm D x 42 cm W x 25 cm H (22 x 17 x 10 inches)

This is a close-up of the rear portion of the industrial computer in which the eight Gamry Series G Potentiostats can be clearly seen.  The short flat-ribbon cables connect the Controller and Potentiostat Boards on each Potentiostat.  You can also see the power cables connecting the computer power supply to each Controller Board.

Where, you ask, is the processor?  The processor, RAM, controllers, and interfaces are all contained on a Single Board Computer on the "far left" of the computer chassis.

A MultEchem consisting of Reference 600 Potentiostats uses one or two USB Hubs to connect to the computer. A standard Windows desktop computer works fine for Reference 600s.
