The CPT Flexcell is designed to counteract a problem that plagues most
other flat sample designs -- crevice corrosion around the specimen seal. First popularized
by Avesta Steel, the cell utilizes a flooded gasket seal design to inhibit crevice
corrosion between the sample and its holder. This simple yet elegant design results
in an easy to use, reliable, crevice free system.
The main body of the cell is a two piece construction that allows for easy handling and
assembly. Specimens are mounted facing upwards, allowing for close but unobtrusive
placement of a temperature probe and reference electrode. The Flexcell can be heated
externally with a wrap around heater or internally with insertion heaters. An internal
glass coil allows for temperature control of the the cell using an externally cooled or
heated liquid flow. Flexcell
components were selected to be as chemically inert as possible. In normal use, the
only materials in contact with the test solution are glass, filter paper, and TFE Teflon. The is
therefore
usable with a wide variety of test solutions, including nonaqueous media.
When used in conjunction with the CPT110 Critical Pitting
Temperature software and a TDC2
Temperature Controller
or any other lab grade precision temperature controller, the system becomes a very useful
and powerful tool for studying localized corrosion. In the tradition of Gamry, the
Flexcell
can be used out of the box or adapted to meet your needs.
